Continuing Education
I’m very much looking forward to going to JCK Las Vegas
later this month. In preparation, Steve
Parker and I were talking about the schedule of events. For those of you who don’t know, Steve owns
Customgold, Courtney Gold as well as a retail store called Creative
Goldsmiths. This year, Steve, Lilian and
I will be there. Sandra and Dean from
the shop are coming down to look at some new equipment. Debbie and Jenn will be coming down from Creative. I joked with Steve that he might have done
well to charter a private jet for everyone.
He got very serious about the fact that he attributes much
of our success to continued education.
Not only attending seminars, but observing trends, networking with other
jewellers, meeting suppliers and seeing the latest technology first-hand. His profound question of the day was, “would
you go to a doctor who stopped learning after they graduated med-school?”
Whether it’s visiting JCK Las Vegas, the Western Canadian
Jewellery Expo, staff training, taking courses or reading, there are many ways
to keep fresh. Travel costs are high. Free ways to keep motivated and educated
include reading no-charge jewellery magazines, blogs (like The Toddwaz Report),
net-surfing and working with suppliers to invite product knowledge
presentations.
Stay thirsty my friends…
